This powerful production, based on Michael Morpurgo’s beloved novel, takes audiences on an extraordinary journey from the peaceful fields of rural Devon to the tumultuous trenches of First World War France.
At the heart of this moving drama are the astonishing life-sized puppets created by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company. These remarkable creations bring breathing, galloping, and charging horses to thrilling life on stage, offering a visual spectacle that has captivated audiences worldwide.
The narrative follows young Albert and his cherished horse, Joey. At the outbreak of World War One, Joey is sold to the Cavalry and shipped to France, where he becomes embroiled in enemy fire and embarks on an extraordinary odyssey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in No Man’s Land. Meanwhile, Albert, who remains on his family’s Devon farm, cannot forget Joey. Despite being too young to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to find his beloved horse and bring him home.
