The Perfect, Interactive Introduction to the Theatre for Little First Timers.

If you’re a parent, you already know the magic of Bluey!

Yesterday (27/11), my daughter and I were lucky enough to see this fun-loving TV show come to life at Milton Keynes Theatre.   It’s the one TV show where you find yourself genuinely invested, even after the kids have gone to bed.

Bluey’s Big Play brilliantly captures the heartwarming mix of family chaos and those truly precious moments.

The show is built around the beloved Heeler family – Bluey, Bingo, Chilli and Bandit. If you’ve seen the TV show, you’ll know every episode delivers a valuable, gentle lesson about family life and the live production nails that same feeling.

My four year old was thrilled to experience this on stage and so was I. I was also thrilled to see that the show clocks in at a parent-friendly 50 minutes. It’s the ideal run time for keeping those younger attention spans locked in without hitting the meltdown zone.

The Story: Bandit Just Needs a Break

The narrative is where the show truly connects with parents. Poor Bandit just wants a little downtime to scroll on his phone – something every parent in the audience can relate to.

Naturally, Bluey and Bingo aren’t having it! They swipe his phone to force him to play, kicking off a fast paced, hilarious game of hide and seek. It’s the ultimate parent vs kid standoff and the sweet laughter from the audience was loud and knowing. There’s also a lovely side plot focusing on the realities of being a good sister.

The use of life-sized puppets is truly fantastic. They are voiced by the original cartoon actors, which immediately makes them feel familiar and authentic. The puppeteers are skilled which you quickly forget they are there and you just see the expressive puppets complete with moving eyes, eyebrows and tails.

The whole production is colourful and heart-warming, starting with the iconic theme tune and ending with a lively interactive game of keepy-uppy. It’s highly entertaining from start to finish.

This production it is the ideal, gentle introduction to the magic of theatre for young children, resulting in a wonderful family memory you’ll never forget.
