Review: The Comedy Cow - Sep 25

Last night (05/09) the autumn comedy season stampeded back into The Cock Hotel and what a herd of hilarity it was! Five comedians no less, served up gags fresher than morning milk and the laughs came thick and fast after the summer grazing break. The comics were on form and the whole night was legen-dairy.

MC - Ross Smith

Review; Comedy Cow - Sep 25
The MC for the evening was Ross Smith, a charming, slightly pedantic stand-up, his segments wandering through unexpected pastures of thought and he kept the audience hooked the whole way.

Highlights included his ironic claim of being a part-time fireman – he blew out a candle once… a perfectly-timed plate-clearing heckle and a wonderfully skewed reflection on the stability of a three-legged rescue dog (once you start picturing it, you can’t stop).

The oddball audience members? Ross described them as (f bomb) gifts, volleying back with humour that was sharp but never mean and wrapping the night up with a riotous character analysis of the crowd itself.
He really worked hard up there last night and it paid off. The result was a clever, warm, and thoroughly entertaining success.

Mad Ron

The Comedy Cow Mad Ron Sep 25
First up was Mad Ron. His set isn’t so much a routine as it is a rollercoaster ride through the bizarre theme park that is his mind. One moment, he’s reminiscing about the back in day messaging system, aka a brick through a window (a demo included, mercifully without collateral damage) and the next, he’s waxing lyrical about the wonders of VHS and DOSS…think about it…

Mad Ron tackles everything including holidays (“Why pay good money just to go outside and squint?”), gangster life, even the humble bar of soap with a dry, resonant tone that makes the absurd sound oddly profound. It’s “gangster comedy,” but the kind where the only thing getting hurt is your face from the laughing.

Jake Steers

The Comedy Cow Jake Steers Sep 25
Middle section #1 was Jake Steers: energetic, big-haired and giddy with stories and jokes about his Irish family, friends, school and life. No matter what, he performed relentlessly for an often hard-to-crack crowd and by the end, every one of us had completely warmed to him. His boyish charm and determination shone through as he constantly recovered the room with his good-natured spirit. He gave The Best banter biteback to the heckler of the night, too rude to mention here but no bum notes there ! 😉 Comedy perfection.

Apparently Jake once dressed in a tuxedo for hospital treatment, not only to raise awareness of the situation but also to bring smiles to patients and staff alike. ❤️
He’s a genuine, likeable guy with a natural ability to connect, and it’ll be exciting to see how he progresses.

Dom Bant

Review - The Comedy Cow - Dom Bant - Sep 25
Act #2 was Dom Bant, bants literally by name and by nature!
Deadpan, self-deprecating, and effortlessly relatable, Dom thrives on dissecting the everyday annoyances of life, relationships and the tiny things that make us all mutter under our breath.

He made his stage entrance with no smiles and intonation as flat as a pancake. His set? Dry, sarcastic and deliciously deadpan.

After completing a stand-up comedy course, Dom made his stage debut in 2019 and it was immediately clear that his library-group grumbles and hilariously clever “conversation droning out” sketches are something special.

Droll, understated and working overtime to win over every audience member, Dom was a master of making ordinary frustrations uproariously funny. Keep an eye on him, he’s the quiet storm of comedy you won’t want to miss.

Headliner - Paul F Taylor

The Comedy Cow Paul Taylor Sep 25
Paul is a master of the wonderfully weird. Known for his offbeat storytelling, he whisks audiences into a whimsical world of his own creation, bizarre, brilliant and utterly hilarious. His comedy is a joyride through the ridiculous: you never knew that you’d be contemplating the meaning of a “comedy cow” as just being “milk that tastes funny” (boom boom!).

From obsessive rants about bus replacements we can all appreciate to pondering the “blue light effect” on catching criminals, complete with the genius suggestion that sirens be put on ice cream vans, his humor hits all the right notes.

His set was seemingly effortless, energetic and joyfully nonstop. We learnt about the subtle art of finger communication, played the riotous audience game Play Your Blood Sugars Right and witnessed the epic kitchen utensil wars. There was something for everyone in his polished yet delightfully daft performance, a show that’s as clever as it is proper laugh-out-loud funny. Certainly worthy of top billing and a definite must see again.
In all, the night’s comedy show was udderly fantastic! The team at The Comedy Cow MK deliver excellent, hard-working, creative and unique shows, they consistently prove why they’re the cream of the comedy crop. 🐄
